All you need is love – and a fair amount of patience, hard work and solid decision-making.
At least that’s what 92-year-old Lloyd Andrews says – and he should know. The nonagenarian has just marked 70 years of marriage with his college sweetheart Winnie May.
The couple, who live at the new resort retirement community Maravilla Scottsdale, were featured in the Arizona Republic’s Scottsdale edition recently as they celebrated their Platinum Anniversary.
In the British Commonwealth, the impressive milestone would generate a letter from the Queen. Here in Arizona, the celebrations were a bit less formal as Maravilla Scottsdale hosted the couple, their family and friends to a luncheon party complete with champagne toast, cupcake tower, lots of flowers and a room filled with photographs from their many years together.
Interviewed by a videographer from CBS 5 News, Andrews says their times together weren’t always easy. His best piece of advice for young married couples or those planning to wed is to get married for the right reason – because you really want to spend your life with that person and you’re committed to making it work – through good times and bad.
“Marry the person you really want to live with and be good to each other, and plan to be together for a long time,” Lloyd emphasized. “It’s just that. Do that and you may be living with that person for a very long time.”
