Limelight: Arizona Oncology + 3TV

Discussion on Skin Cancer

Arizona Oncology’s Dr. Tania Cortas explains the risk factors, signs and symptoms to 3TV’s Kaley O’Kelley.

With triple digits fast approaching and Memorial Day weekend just around the corner, Arizona residents are readying their summer survival kits. Instrumental in the prevention of sunburns, skin cancer, premature aging, cataracts, immune system suppression, DNA damage and dilated blood vessels, sunscreen is a necessity for Arizona summers.

Just last year new FDA regulations were announced forcing many popular products to change not only their  packaging, but their claims on protection, removing common terms such as water proof or sweat resistant.

Arizona Oncology’s Dr. Tania Cortas explained the risk factors, signs and symptoms to 3TV’s Kaley O’Kelley.

Arizona Oncology recommends the following practices for sun safety:

  • Protect skin with clothing, such as long sleeve shirts and hats with broad brim.
  • Avoid being in outdoors when UV light is strongest, particularly between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
  • Seek shade.
  • Use sunscreen and lip balm with an SPF factor of 15 or more on areas of the skin exposed to the sun. Products should be used on hazy or overcast days as well.
  • Wear wrap-around sunglasses with at least 99 percent UV absorption to provide the best protection for the eyes and the skin around the eyes.
  • Avoid other sources of UV lights, such as tanning beds and sun lamps.
  • Protect children from the sun by using the same precautions as adults.

PR Primer: Congrats Grads!

This Friday is ASU’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism’s convocation ceremony for the class of 2012. After four years learning about journalism and public relations, these students are now seeking full-time employment. But given the economic state, kick-starting a career in public relations is often times easier said than done. Here are some tips for recent grads entering into this big, scary world.

  1. Hone in your writing skills: Writing is an important part of public relations. In your career you will write press releases, media pitches, presentations, communications plans, social media posts, blogs and more – and sometimes all of these things on the same day. Practice writing and keep reading. It’s important to increase your vocabulary and take tips on how other professionals are writing in newspapers, magazines, blogs and other press releases.
  2. Network, network, network: Who do you know in the industry? Who can be your reference that is well-known and respected in the PR community? Having any advantage when looking for a job is crucial, so be sure to network with fellow PR professionals and be known for your positive qualities.
  3. Find a mentor: Do you have someone from school, your personal life or a past internship that can be your mentor? Mentors can help develop your skills, offer advice, help point out your strengths and weaknesses and challenge you. Role play with your mentor for interview prep, pitching media, doing a presentation, etc. And don’t forget to have them review your resume.
  4. Dress appropriately: From your interview to coming into work every day – be sure to dress appropriately. After your first few days at your new job, you will quickly learn the company’s culture and know what is appropriate attire. But before you get to that point, you have to pass the interview.
  5. Professional development: When inches from landing your first full-time job, you are probably so excited to have a job offer that you haven’t taken the time to think about salary negotiation. Salary negotiation doesn’t necessarily mean asking for more money. You can negotiate to add the costs of professional development to your salary, such as membership to PRSA or IABC. Be prepared before having the conversation with your future employer with the price of membership and any additional costs (ie: price for luncheons, lectures, etc).

Congratulations class of 2012! We look forward to seeing you in the PR community!

In Focus: Tishin Donkersley

Earth Day may have just passed, but we think it’s important to keep environmental sustainability top of mind year round. Tishin Donkersley, editor-in-chief of Green Living Magazine, agrees. Growing up in a “green” household, writing, editing and talking about green living is a natural fit for Tishin. She shares her passion for sustainability and the magazine with us in our latest installment of In Focus.

1. What inspired the creation of Green Living magazine?

The original concept of a green lifestyle magazine came to Publisher John Stacy and Principal Dorie Morales. John liked the idea so much, as there were none like it on the market at the time, and immediately moved forward – we launched within four months! He brought me in to develop the whole direction for the magazine and develop the content to what essentially is an applicable format for living green. Since sustainability touches all aspects of our lives I divided the information up into three parts: LIVE, WORK & PLAY.

2. What is you favorite topic to write about for the magazine? And why?

Easy, I love people and I love the interview. With a Masters degree in psychology, I’m drawn to the psyche and extracting the essence out of each person. My dad always taught me “you can learn something from everyone,” and I live by that motto. From Dr. Deepak Chopra, Dr. Weil, Ed Begley Jr. to Chris Dyson, I’ve always enjoyed the “sit down” and for each conversation I have walked away inspired, educated and energized. Whether you’re famous or from around the block, everyone has a story to tell.

3. What can readers expect when they pick up a copy of Green Living? What stories do you like to feature?

Expect to learn! You will walk away with information on how to improve your life today! It’s a fun and informational magazine. My goal is to empower the reader to take action to improve their life and the environment. We talk about everything from nutrition, food and wine, fashion, health & wellness, pets, green business, architecture, green technology to restaurants, cool gadgets and celebrity profiles.

4. If you weren’t writing and editing, what would you be doing? What other career path were/are you interested in?

Professional traveler – kidding – ok I’m not. Well if I was, I would write about it. I guess I’m a writer at heart. I consider myself a creative generator, energizer, connector and a teacher at heart – if there is a career that equals all of that, I’m all ears – until then, sustainability and the media life is working pretty well for me – I love the energy and I’m blessed with all the friends and colleagues I have in the industry.

5. Earth Day just passed. What were the best events you saw from this year celebrating the holiday? Was there any particular promotion that just wowed you?

I think all of the events were wonderful. The fact that people took the time to volunteer and celebrate the Earth and encourage our community to recommit to sustainable practices is fantastic. I wish it wasn’t just one day a year. Sustainability is an ongoing commitment and I hope to encourage everyone to continue to act in a sustainable way. Believe it or not, small or large, your efforts matter.  If you don’t know where to start, check out our once-a-day green calendar on Pinterest or at www.greenlivingaz.com .

Thanks for chatting and GO GREEN!
